2025 New Year’s Reading Resolutions
In 2023 I decided I wanted to read every Pulitzer Prize winner for fiction going back to 1948. I slacked on this goal in 2024, but am looking forward to returning to this project in the coming year. Reading the winners is a great excuse to read exceptional books and consider the factors that shaped them at the time they were written. Plus, I’d like to reiterate that I think James by Percival Everett is a shoo-in for the 2024 Prize announced in May 2025.
I want to read more books that I already own. I love the New York Public Library, but I might need to pause before I immediately request a new find in order to prioritize my current shelves. I had to invest in (another) large bookshelf this year for my small apartment, which can only be justified by reading the books with which I’m filling the shelves.
If I’m going to read more from my shelves that means I also need to prioritize backlist titles, books that aren’t published in 2025. I am working on striking a balance between keeping up with new releases and making sure I get to books that I haven’t had time for yet.
Last year, one of my reading resolutions was to read more non-fiction. I achieved this goal … but only with a 1% increase. This year, I am once again attempting to improve on this rate by 5% and am aiming to read around 20% non-fiction.
An Addition to The Book House Blog in 2025
In addition to being a big reader, I am also a massive theater fan. I’ve loved going to shows since I was a kid, but since I moved to New York nearly a decade ago for college I have taken advantage of every deal imaginable to see as many shows as I can. In 2024 I attended 39 Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway shows. In 2023, I attended 46. In 2025, I’ll be incorporating a quarterly round-up of the best theater I’ve seen for anybody who is local or traveling to New York.
On to 2025! Thanks for subscribing to The Book House Blog. I’m looking forward to reading and reviewing books in the year ahead. Until then, you can check out my favorite reads from 2024 below.
I’m so excited for your Broadway round-ups! And may this be the year we both make a dent in our shelves 🫡🫠
